Bangkok: The Philippines, acting as the current chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), is set to facilitate an informal meeting between Myanmar and the bloc's foreign ministers in Bangkok, Thailand. This gathering, scheduled for July 12, marks a significant diplomatic effort by the ASEAN community to address ongoing issues in Myanmar following the 2021 military coup.

According to Philippines News Agency, Myanmar will be represented by its Foreign Minister, U Tin Maung Swe, at this crucial meeting. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has highlighted that this will be the first in-person engagement between Myanmar's foreign minister and ASEAN counterparts since the political upheaval in Myanmar. The DFA emphasized that Myanmar remains an integral part of the ASEAN family, and the meeting aims to provide a platform for open dialogue.

During the meeting, U Tin Maung Swe is expected to brief his ASEAN counterparts on the current developments in Myanmar. The foreign ministers will exchange views on ASEAN's engagement with Myanmar, exploring possible concrete steps for addressing concerns such as the cessation of violence, fostering constructive dialogue among concerned parties, and providing humanitarian assistance. These discussions are aligned with the principles outlined in the Five-Point Consensus.

The upcoming meeting follows the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu, where ASEAN leaders tasked the foreign ministers with maintaining constructive and principled engagement with Myanmar. The focus remains on adhering to the Five-Point Consensus while navigating the complex regional dynamics involving Myanmar.
