Quezon city: The Department of Agriculture (DA) has announced an allocation of approximately PHP250 million to bolster the seed industry in the Philippines. This development follows Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr.'s inauguration of the revamped National Seed Reserve Facility at the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) compound in Quezon City. The facility has a capacity for 9,000 bags and is intended to support regions across Luzon.
According to Philippines News Agency, Agriculture Secretary Tiu Laurel emphasized that the budget will facilitate the completion of solar-powered seed reserve facilities in selected areas nationwide. He noted, "I know it's PHP250 million, if I remember correctly," referencing the funding for the current year. The seed storage system aims to ensure a stable supply of seeds and buffer stock to prepare for any eventualities.
The 2026 seed reserve funding plans include constructing larger and modernized facilities in Bicol and Iloilo. Tiu Laurel revealed that a higher budget is anticipated for 2027 to further expand the number of solar-powered seed reserve facilities in the country. "Next year, we're putting PHP300 million because that's what's needed there including the new building, new insulation, new panels and there's even a racking system," he explained.
Tiu Laurel underscored the importance of seed reserves in sustaining food systems and supporting the planting cycles of local farmers, especially during calamities. He stated, "In case plantations have been washed out or damaged, the national government must be ready to provide the needed seeds to prevent the supply halt for a long period or for a large volume, to avoid spiking prices."
In the long-term, the government aims to establish seed facilities in all regions to protect both local farmers and consumers. The Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) has also announced its plans to enhance its seed system facilities at its centers in Baguio, Los Ba±os, Guimaras, Lagranja, and Davao.
