Manila: Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) President Pablo Virgilio Cardinal David clarified that there are no specific candidates in the conclave to be held following the passing of Pope Francis. David emphasized that the method of choosing the new leader of the Catholic Church differs significantly from political elections.
According to Philippines News Agency, Cardinal David stressed in an interview on Church-run Radio Veritas that the process of selecting the next pope should be considered a "retreat" rather than an election. This period is marked by sincere prayers and reflection, guided by the Holy Spirit, rather than political maneuvering. "There is no candidate in the conclave," David stated, urging people not to equate this spiritual process with government elections.
Cardinal David highlighted the profound moral and spiritual duty that Cardinal Electors have as they participate in the conclave. He reaffirmed the importance of approaching this moment not with a political mindset, but with a spirit of devotion and prayer. The Kalookan prelate also pointed out that no one aspires to become pope due to the immense responsibility of leading over a billion Catholics globally.
The CBCP head called for unity in prayer among the faithful as the cardinals prepare to commence the conclave, which is expected to take place within 15 to 20 days after Pope Francis' passing. He also urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information to prevent misinformation on critical matters.
The Philippines is represented by three Cardinal Electors: Cardinal David, Manila Archbishop Cardinal Jose Advincula, and Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, who currently serves as the Pro Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization.
According to Vatican data, out of the 252 cardinals worldwide, 135 are Cardinal Electors, with most having been appointed by Pope Francis. Pope Benedict XVI and St. John Paul II appointed 108 and five, respectively. Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, passed away due to a stroke and irreversible heart failure at the age of 88.
The Vatican News reported that the body of the Argentine pontiff will be transferred to St. Peter's Basilica on Wednesday at 9 a.m. to lie in state until his funeral on Saturday, April 26, at 10 a.m. During his 2015 visit to the Philippines, Pope Francis held a Mass in Tacloban City, a region severely affected by Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) in 2013.
