PNP-ACG Investigates Fake News Around Duterte’s ICC Case

Manila: The Philippine National Police-Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG) announced its ongoing investigation into the spread of misinformation and fake social media posts concerning the International Criminal Court's (ICC) case against former President Rodrigo Duterte. This development comes amidst rising tensions and numerous rallies related to the case.

According to Philippines News Agency, PNP Information Chief Col. Randulf Tua±o stated in a press conference at Camp Crame that all pertinent information, including memes and fake news about former President Rodrigo Duterte, has been provided to ACG Chief Brig. Gen. Bernard Yang for appropriate action. The PNP and the National Bureau of Investigation are working in coordination to identify and take action against those responsible for peddling fake news.

In a Palace briefing, Undersecretary Claire Castro of the Presidential Communications Office confirmed that the PCO is actively collaborating with the PNP in its investigation efforts. This initiative comes as the PNP has monitored at least 58 rallies, with approximately 49,000 participants, in relation to the ICC proceedings against Duterte. Most of these rallies were held in Davao City, Duterte's hometown, and were noted for their peaceful dispersal.

Tua±o emphasized that authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely, with security measures in place to maintain peace and order. Although the heightened alert status imposed following Duterte's arrest on March 11 has been lifted, vigilance remains a priority.

Duterte was arrested at the airport on March 11 upon his return from Hong Kong, following an ICC-issued arrest warrant received and executed by the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) Manila and the PNP. After arriving in The Hague, Netherlands, on March 12, he was transferred to the ICC Detention Center in Scheveningen. His first ICC appearance took place via video link on March 14, with a hearing scheduled for September 23 to confirm the charges against him.
