PNP Chief Confident in Laos Drug Shipment Investigation Progress

Manila:The Philippine National Police (PNP) leadership has instructed investigators to establish a strong evidentiary base before filing charges in connection with the interception of a 521-kilogram suspected 'shabu' shipment in Laos.

According to Philippines News agency, PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. expressed confidence that the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) has thoroughly examined all evidence to hold those involved accountable under the law. He conveyed satisfaction with the investigation's progress and the diligence of the investigators, emphasizing the importance of an evidence-based approach to establish the truth and ensure accountability.

The CIDG is expected to present its investigation report to the PNP chief by Friday, October 23. The report is based on months of investigation, including a review of CCTV footage, collection of witness testimonies, issuance of over 40 subpoenas, and examination of documentary evidence related to the alleged attempt to transport a large quantity of illegal drugs using a chartered aircraft.

CIDG director Maj. Gen. Alexander Morico II, during a press conference, stated that seven out of eleven persons of interest have appeared before the CIDG. He noted that around 40 subpoenas have been issued to individuals, companies, and government agencies in connection with the case. Morico clarified that not all those summoned are persons of interest, but they were asked to provide information to complete the story behind the shabu importation.

The investigation continues to pursue and locate persons of interest who remain unaccounted for, as their participation is crucial to uncover the complete circumstances surrounding the case. Once the investigation concludes, the legal teams of PNP and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) will decide on the cases to be filed against those involved.
