Quezon city: Acting Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. on Monday denied reports that some active and retired officials approached him to withdraw his support from President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.
According to Philippines News Agency, Nartatez stated that neither civilians nor former police officials had contacted him or his staff regarding any destabilization efforts. During a press briefing at Camp Crame in Quezon City, he emphasized, "No one has spoken with me as well as my staff, commanders, and even the regional directors. If there are any, I can tell them not to do it."
Nartatez further elaborated, questioning the basis for such actions, as President Marcos won by a majority vote. He expressed confidence in the current administration, stating that he sees no reason for attempts to remove the president from office. He also noted that there was no need for a "loyalty check" within the police force, asserting that the state of morale in the PNP remains relatively high.
Highlighting the reforms under the Marcos administration, particularly against corruption and illegal activities contributing to issues like flooding, Nartatez referenced the President's call during the July State of the Nation Address to end corruption. He reiterated the administration's commitment to addressing these long-standing issues.
Both retired and active members of the military and police have expressed their backing for Marcos' anti-corruption initiatives. Various organizations, including the Association of General and Flag Officers, Philippine National Police Academy Alumni Association, Inc., National Reserve Officers' Training Corps Alumni Association, and Confederation of National Unified Service Associations, have issued manifestos supporting the President's efforts.
In related news, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro emphasized the importance of the military and other uniformed personnel remaining apolitical, cautioning against their use for political gains or destabilizing government efforts.
