Manila: Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. on Monday reminded police chiefs and unit heads to strictly enforce heat-safety measures as temperatures rise.

According to Philippines News Agency, Nartatez emphasized the need for supervisors to ensure proper pacing and adequate rest for police personnel, particularly those stationed outdoors. During a press briefing, he stated, "I remind our police chiefs and heads of units to ensure that their men on the ground are getting their breaks while on duty to protect them from too much heat."

The country is currently facing intensified heat during the dry season, with dangerous heat index levels recorded in several areas. The heat index refers to the perceived temperature when humidity is combined with air temperature.

Nartatez outlined the PNP's plans to implement necessary adjustments, including rotations and heat breaks, to safeguard the welfare of personnel on the ground, particularly those involved in beat patrol and visibility. He stressed the importance of proper hydration and urged officers to remain vigilant for signs of heat exhaustion.

In addition to these measures, Nartatez assured that the PNP would provide heat-protection gear and support equipment to officers. "The PNP leadership gives utmost importance to their well-being as frontliners in law enforcement. Hindi rin nila magagawa ang kanilang tungkulin nang maayos kung sila ay wala sa maayos na kondisyon (They cannot do their job properly if they are not in good condition)," he said.

To further prevent heat-related incidents, the PNP chief instructed all units to monitor heat index updates and make necessary adjustments to deployments accordingly.
