PNP Intensifies Investigation into Abusive Online Lending Practices, Reports 47,000 Complaints

Manila: The Philippine National Police (PNP) has intensified its investigation into abusive practices by online lending platforms, focusing on operators accused of harassing borrowers, invading privacy, and violating cybercrime laws.

According to Philippines News Agency, the PNP's increased efforts come in response to over 47,400 complaints filed since 2024. The complaints detail instances of threats, public shaming, and unauthorized access to borrowers' contact lists. PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. stated that there have been documented cases of manipulated photos used to intimidate and humiliate borrowers, which necessitate police intervention.

Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC) Executive Director Benjamin Acorda highlighted that 47,446 complaints against online lending firms have been filed from August 2024 to January 2026 due to alleged abusive practices. In response, Nartatez has directed the PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) to take action by arresting suspects and building cases related to online harassment, data privacy violations, and other related offenses.

Nartatez emphasized that the PNP-ACG is working closely with the PAOCC, Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and National Privacy Commission (NPC) to identify and act against violators. He urged the public to exercise caution and borrow only from SEC-registered lenders, while also advising victims of harassment to report incidents to their nearest police station.
