Albay: The Philippine National Police (PNP) has initiated comprehensive preparations to address potential lahar flow and other public safety risks in the vicinity of Mayon Volcano. This action comes in response to the looming threat of heavy rainfall associated with Tropical Depression (TD) Caloy.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Office of Civil Defense has expressed concerns about possible lahar flows as TD Caloy made its entrance into the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Saturday evening. The tropical depression's center was last located 770 kilometers east of Surigao City, Surigao del Norte, based on the latest data available as of 11 a.m.

PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. announced that police units in the Bicol Region are on standby, ready to assist with evacuation efforts and road-clearing operations. This is being conducted in collaboration with local government units and disaster risk reduction offices, following directives from President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla.

In a statement released on Sunday, Nartatez emphasized the PNP's ongoing coordination with various government agencies to ensure public safety. He highlighted the priority of safeguarding residents and maintaining clear access routes for emergency responses.

To bolster these efforts, Nartatez instructed police units to ensure the readiness of vehicles and equipment for rapid deployment. He also urged the public to heed advisories and instructions from authorities, emphasizing the importance of vigilance and cooperation, particularly for those residing near river channels and volcanic slopes vulnerable to lahar flows.
