Manila: The Philippine National Police (PNP) announced its plans for a comprehensive security strategy to ensure the safety of the 2026 Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and Related Summits, which the country will host.

According to Philippines News Agency, PNP Acting Chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez, Jr. stated that the initiative is in response to President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr.'s directive to uphold the national commitment to hosting regional and global events securely. Nartatez highlighted that preparations are underway, with the PNP already on alert as preliminary meetings for the hosting have begun. He emphasized that the security playbook is being updated to address any potential scenarios, including traffic management and VIP protection.

Nartatez noted the core focus is a thorough review and update of all security protocols to align with modern challenges and the unique nature of the event. This proactive approach involves high-level collaboration with partner agencies to ensure an orderly, safe, and successful international event. The Acting PNP Chief underscored the police force's dedication to ensuring smooth operations, prioritizing the safety of both Philippine delegates and foreign visitors, especially the heads of state.

He mentioned that the security strategy will be tailored to support President Marcos' vision of a 'chill and hospitable' ASEAN hosting. Nartatez assured that the security measures would be robust yet discreet, allowing the Philippines' renowned hospitality to be showcased. Coordination and meetings with other agencies are ongoing to finalize the security measures for the event.
