PNP Probes Local Connections of Foreign-Led Scam Hub Dismantled in Pasay

Pasay:The Philippine National Police (PNP) has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the local connections of a dismantled scam hub operated by foreign nationals in Pasay City. The operation, which took place inside the KE Tower Building C on Cuneta Avenue, resulted in the rescue and profiling of 166 foreign nationals involved in cyber-fraud activities.

According to Philippines News Agency, PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. has tasked the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) with expanding the probe to identify the support networks facilitating the scam hub's operations. This includes financiers, recruiters, facilitators, and other potential accomplices.

The dismantling of the scam hub followed complaints from three Indonesian nationals who were lured to the Philippines under the false pretense of legitimate employment as "virtual assistants" by an online gambling syndicate. The crackdown revealed the involvement of 138 Indonesians, 16 Vietnamese, 10 Chinese, and 2 Malaysians, who were coerced into the fraudulent operations.

The syndicate targeted victims from Vietnam, China, Malaysia, and Indonesia using a four-stage fraud scheme. This involved contacting targets with claims of parcels containing illegal drugs and posing as police officers to threaten victims with criminal investigations. The scheme included a member acting as a "good cop" offering assistance in exchange for money.

Investigators discovered that the syndicate recruited workers through Telegram and Instagram, advertising virtual assistant positions. Notably, the foreign nationals involved entered the country as tourists without working visas.

The operation was uncovered after three individuals escaped the facility and reported the activities to authorities, leading to the raid. The police recovered Indonesian and Vietnamese police uniforms and materials used to intimidate victims and legitimize the scheme.

PNP Chief Nartatez emphasized the importance of vigilance against deceptive employment offers and reiterated the PNP's commitment to pursuing organized fraud relentlessly. Investigations are ongoing to understand the syndicate's global financial reach and to pursue criminal charges against the suspects involved.
