Manila: The Philippine National Police (PNP) has reaffirmed its resolve to safeguard children from online harm as it ordered stronger law enforcement measures against individuals and groups exploiting minors through digital platforms. This initiative aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive during his fifth State of the Nation Address, under the guidance of Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla, to bolster governmental efforts in protecting Filipino children from online threats, violence, exploitation, and harmful digital content.
According to Philippines News Agency, PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. emphasized the PNP's commitment to ensuring the safety of children amid evolving threats. He stated, 'We in the PNP want nothing more than to ensure the safety of our children. As threats continue to evolve, we remain committed to protecting them from all forms of harm, particularly those facilitated through online platforms.'
During his SONA, President Marcos called for a collaborative societal approach to shield Filipino children from violent online content, toxic social media, pornography, and fake news, highlighting that these online threats contribute to various social ills. He urged government agencies and families to work together to safeguard the youth.
In response, Nartatez directed the PNP to intensify intelligence monitoring and law enforcement operations against syndicates involved in the online exploitation of children and the dissemination of extremist content targeting minors. He has instructed the Anti-Cybercrime Group to step up surveillance and intensify operations against groups indoctrinating children into extreme violence and radicalism online.
The PNP is also strengthening coordination with social media platforms and partner agencies to curb the spread of harmful online content and identify digital networks exploiting children. Nartatez emphasized the necessity of family and community involvement, urging parents and guardians to monitor changes in children's behavior that might indicate online manipulation promoting violence.
Furthermore, the PNP is considering a proposal to restrict social media use among minors, reviewing other countries' policies to potentially create a similar framework in the Philippines.
In a separate matter, Nartatez assured that the PNP would provide benefits to the family of Patrolman Allan Chris Heredero, who died in a road accident after a 24-hour security deployment for President Marcos' SONA. He expressed condolences to Heredero's family, pledging that the PNP would ensure they receive due assistance and benefits.
Patrolman Heredero, 33, assigned at the Administrative Holding Unit-Regional Mobile Force Battalion of the National Capital Region Police Office, died after being run over by a truck in Caloocan City. The accident occurred as he was returning home, and he was declared dead on arrival at a hospital.
