Manila: The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Wednesday announced a 12.66-percent decrease in the nationwide crime rate from January 1 to March 12. PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Randulf Tua±o revealed that a total of 6,377 focus crimes were recorded during this period, compared to 7,301 in the same timeframe last year. Focus crimes include murder, homicide, rape, physical injury, carnapping, and theft.

According to Philippines News Agency, Brig. Gen. Tua±o emphasized the positive trend in crime prevention during the Kapihan sa Manila Hotel forum. However, he cautioned that the PNP anticipates a potential rise in robbery and theft cases due to the increase in oil prices prompted by the ongoing Middle East conflict.

The PNP acknowledges that the potential increase in crimes against property is not merely a perception. In response, Tua±o stated that the PNP plans to boost police visibility as a preventive measure. "Our number one intervention is police visibility so that the people can really feel that the Philippine National Police is there," he explained.
