Manila: The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Wednesday expressed support for the proposal to implement mandatory bag inspections in schools across the country. This move is part of an initiative by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., guided by Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla, to enhance safety and security measures for students, teachers, and school personnel nationwide.

According to Philippines News Agency, PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. highlighted that the proposed policy could help deter the entry of deadly weapons and other prohibited items into school campuses. He stated that the PNP is prepared to assist once the policy is finalized by the relevant authorities. Nartatez emphasized the importance of strengthening security protocols in schools in response to recent threats of violence.

The Department of Education (DepEd) is currently evaluating the proposal following a fatal shooting incident in Tacloban City that resulted in the deaths of three students. Education officials are considering mandatory bag inspections as part of a comprehensive approach to prevent similar incidents. DepEd is also assessing the feasibility of such inspections, particularly in larger schools where logistical challenges may arise due to the high number of students.

Nartatez reiterated that PNP personnel are ready to aid in enforcing these policies once they are approved. He assured the public of the PNP's commitment to collaborating with the education sector to bolster campus security. Sustained coordination between law enforcement agencies and school officials is deemed essential for maintaining safe learning environments.
