Manila: The Philippine National Police (PNP) announced on Tuesday that a preliminary report concerning the administrative case against 15 police officers involved in the disappearance of 'sabungeros' (cockfight aficionados) is expected to be released by the end of this week. The officers are currently under investigation at Camp Crame.
According to Philippines News Agency, PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo confirmed that the administrative case against the officers is nearing completion, with the report set to identify those who will face charges. While the PNP awaits the legal actions of the Department of Justice (DOJ) regarding potential criminal charges, they are prepared to provide investigative assistance if requested.
Whistleblower Julie "Dondon" Patidongan, also known as Totoy, remains under PNP protective custody as a key witness in the case. Fajardo emphasized the importance of gathering more witnesses to corroborate existing statements and ensure thorough fact-checking. As part of the ongoing investigation, police are also securing additional sites where the missing individuals' remains may have been disposed of, aside from Taal Lake. Specific details about these sites are being withheld to prevent potential tampering.
National Police Commission (Napolcom) Vice Chairperson and Executive Officer Rafael Vicente Calinisan expressed satisfaction that Patidongan is under PNP protective custody, highlighting the importance of his safety as a witness. Calinisan also commended the PNP and DOJ for placing the implicated officers in restricted custody, ensuring their ability to present their side during proceedings.
Calinisan praised the collaboration between Napolcom, the PNP, and the DOJ, describing their joint efforts as fulfilling. He particularly lauded PNP Chief Gen. Nicolas Torre for his leadership, noting the positive working relationship between the agencies. Calinisan expressed optimism that this cooperation would continue to promote the welfare of police officers and help restore public trust in law enforcement.
