Manila: The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) has announced the members of the men's and women's volleyball pools set to compete in the 20th Asian Games scheduled from September 19 to October 4 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. This announcement marks a significant step in the preparations for the international sporting event.
According to Philippines News Agency, the pools primarily consist of players who participated in the FIVB Men's World Championship held in the Philippines in September 2025 and the Bangkok Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) in December 2025. The women's team includes notable players such as Jia De Guzman, Justine Yliyzeth Jazareno, and Jennifer Nierva, among others. The men's team features athletes including Bryan Bagunas, Marck Jesus Espejo, and Lloyd Josafat.
POC secretary-general Wharton Chan has informed the reappointment of Italian Angiolino Frigoni and Japanese Takayuki Minowa as head coaches for the men's and women's teams, respectively. Their appointments are effective from July 1 and will last until October 15, ensuring continuity and stability in team management.
The POC is also seeking full support from the Premier Volleyball League, with assistance from its president Ricky Palou and commissioner Sherwin Malonzo, particularly for the Alas women's team, many of whom play in the league. This collaboration aims to enhance the performance and preparedness of the athletes for the upcoming games.
The POC is currently managing the national volleyball team program due to the suspension of the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) by the FIVB over governance concerns and alleged violations of its Code of Ethics. Both the POC and the Philippine Sports Commission have upheld this suspension, taking charge of the national teams across all sports for the Olympics, Asian Games, and SEAG.
The deadline for submitting the final list of participants to the Aichi-Nagoya Organizing Committee is set for July 1, marking a crucial milestone in the preparation for the games.
