Manila: The Philippine National Police (PNP) has extended assistance, including securing evacuation sites, following the massive fire in Parola Compound in Manila that displaced more than 2,000 families over the weekend. Various police units were mobilized to support evacuation centers and maintain peace and order in the area, the PNP said in a statement on Tuesday.
According to Philippines News Agency, PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. highlighted the police's commitment not only to maintaining peace and order but also to making their presence felt during such unfortunate incidents. The fire, which escalated to Task Force Bravo at 4:10 p.m. on Saturday and Task Force Charlie at 5:15 p.m., was brought under control by firefighters at 12:15 a.m. on Sunday, with no casualties reported.
Nartatez emphasized the importance of a robust police presence to prevent disturbances in evacuation areas. "A sufficient number of our personnel were sent not only to secure evacuation centers but also to coordinate with the local government unit in providing other necessary assistance," he stated. Ensuring the safety of women, children, and the elderly in evacuation centers is a priority under the directive.
To further support the displaced families, police help desks will be established in evacuation centers to address their immediate needs. Additionally, local police units will assist the Bureau of Fire Protection in investigating the incident.
