Leyte: The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) has initiated the rehabilitation of Carigara Port in Leyte to address structural issues and restore its operational capacity, Mayor Eduardo Ong Jr. announced. The PPA has allocated PHP20 million for the repairs, which are projected to be completed within six months. "Hopefully, it will be finished within six months," Ong stated in an interview.

According to Philippines News Agency, the project comes amid limited transport options following restrictions imposed on the San Juanico Bridge, which is now limited to vehicles weighing three tons or less. Carigara Port has been identified as a potential alternative route for vehicles traveling between Leyte and Samar or Matnog; however, prior structural deficiencies have prevented its use. The PPA had warned that allowing heavy vehicles could exacerbate the damage, prompting immediate rehabilitation.

Last year, the Leyte Provincial Board urged the PPA to rehabilitate the port to aid in the transport of goods and passengers, support economic development, and ensure the efficient delivery of aid during disasters. Ong mentioned that the local government will maintain coordination with the PPA and private sector to encourage ferry and roll-on/roll-off operators to resume operations at the port once repairs are complete.
