PPA Conducts Surprise Drug Test Ahead of Undas

Manila: The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) has conducted a surprise drug test for its regular and contract-of-service (COS) workers at its head office in Port Area, Manila.

According to Philippines News Agency, PPA General Manager Jay Santiago stated that the drug test, held on Thursday, aimed to maintain a drug-free workplace to sustain a safe, efficient, and reliable port services nationwide. Santiago emphasized that the safety and welfare of ports and passengers are PPA's top priority, which includes ensuring a drug-free environment.

A total of 770 workers from the PPA head office participated in the testing, a practice regularly held since 2016 to support the government's nationwide anti-drug campaign. Santiago highlighted that the program aims to ensure that all port personnel remain fit for duty as the agency prepares for the anticipated surge in passenger and cargo operations.

Employees who tested positive will undergo confirmatory testing, counseling, and administrative action in accordance with regulations of the Civil Service Commission (CSC) and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA). Santiago underscored the agency's zero-tolerance policy for drug use within its workforce, stating that immediate action will be taken against personnel who test positive.

The surprise drug test is part of PPA's preparations for the expected exodus of travelers to the provinces during the upcoming Undas. Santiago noted that more passengers are expected to travel through the country's ports this All Saints' and All Souls' Days compared to last year due to the long weekend and recent natural disasters.
