Manila: The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) announced on Friday the suspension of all voyages at several ports across the country due to the adverse weather conditions caused by tropical depression Wilma.

According to Philippines News Agency, the PPA issued an advisory stating that all trips have been cancelled at various Port Management Offices (PMOs) including those in Bohol, Eastern Leyte/Samar, Western Leyte/Biliran, Surigao, Misamis Occidental/Ozamis, Negros Oriental/Siquijor, and Negros Occidental/Bacolod/Banago-Bredco.

PPA General Manager Jay Santiago has instructed all PMOs to adhere to safety protocols as outlined in the Guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures for ports during inclement weather. This includes coordinating with terminal operators and shipping lines for immediate operational assessments and ensuring the public is promptly informed of any trip cancellations or delays.

Santiago emphasized the importance of safety for passengers, port workers, and all stakeholders, stating, "Let's not wait for an accident to happen in this weather, the winds and waves at ports are strong, so safety is our priority."

The PPA has also intensified monitoring of vessel movements and cargo handling operations to ensure that sufficient personnel are available to manage PPA operations if weather conditions deteriorate further. Additionally, ready-to-eat food packs from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) are prepared for distribution to stranded port passengers.
