PRA Refutes Claims Linking Pasay Reclamation Project to Metro Manila Floods

Pasay city: The Philippine Reclamation Authority (PRA) has dismissed allegations that the ongoing reclamation project in Pasay City is responsible for the recent flooding in Metro Manila. Recent floods were attributed to monsoon rains and a typhoon, but the PRA has clarified that the project is not to blame.

According to Philippines News Agency, PRA Principal Engineer Jay Manalo stated during an inspection of the Pasay Reclamation Development Project that the 600-hectare project did not obstruct any natural waterways. These waterways are crucial for directing rainwater from Metro Manila to Manila Bay, and the project ensures they remain unobstructed.

Manalo highlighted that the reclamation project has been successful in preventing garbage from reaching Dolomite Beach, which previously faced blockages due to debris. By intercepting trash from nearby provinces, the project helps maintain clear outlet channels, thus reducing urban flooding.

The PRA also pointed out that the Pasay reclamation project is the only one with full government approval, while other proposed developments around Manila Bay are suspended. These suspended projects are still in the planning and implementation stages.

The agency assured that the Pasay project includes environmental safeguards and drainage systems designed to mitigate flooding and pollution in Metro Manila.
