Manila: The Bishop of the Diocese of Kalookan, Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David, has called on Roman Catholics to pray for the cardinals who will soon gather to elect the successor of the late Pope Francis. As an elector in the forthcoming conclave, Cardinal David emphasized the importance of spiritual support over personal endorsements.
According to Philippines News Agency, Cardinal David conveyed through a social media post that prayers should accompany the electors, highlighting the need to focus on hope and faith rather than individual preferences. He urged believers to refrain from speculation and instead trust in divine guidance, reminding them that the Church's mission should not be overshadowed by human power dynamics or traditional pomp.
Cardinal David also stressed that the papal election is a spiritual process rather than a political contest. While acknowledging that individuals may have personal hopes for certain candidates, he emphasized that the ultimate decision rests in the hands of the Holy Spirit and the College of Cardinals. He cautioned against turning the sacred discernment into a spectacle through campaign videos or fictional portrayals in media.
Furthermore, Cardinal David, who presides over the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines, encouraged the faithful to share Scripture and words of encouragement instead of endorsements. He highlighted the importance of nurturing faith through prayers that promote justice, peace, and compassion in today's world.
Cardinal David, along with Cardinals Jose Advincula and Luis Antonio Tagle, will join the College of Cardinals next month to elect the new pontiff. The papal seat was declared "sede vacante" following Pope Francis's passing on April 21.
