President Marcos Advocates for Philippines’ Role in Global Critical Minerals Supply

Pasay City:President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has announced intentions for the Philippines to expand its involvement in global critical minerals supply chains. Emphasizing the country's rich deposits of nickel, copper, and other minerals, he highlighted their growing importance to sectors like electric vehicles, batteries, and renewable energy.

According to Philippines News Agency, President Marcos' message was delivered by Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Juan Miguel Cuna at the Mining Philippines 2026 International Conference and Exhibition. Marcos stated that the Philippines has the potential to engage more actively in industries and value chains leveraging its mineral resources.

The administration aims to industrialize the country by responsibly exploiting its natural wealth and prioritizing Filipino interests. The conference serves as a platform for industry leaders, policymakers, and investors to exchange ideas, forge partnerships, and identify practical ways to strengthen the mineral sectors.

President Marcos also highlighted collaborations with countries like the United States, Canada, Australia, and Sweden to build secure and reliable mineral supply chains. Executive Order No. 122 is part of the government's strategy to develop the downstream minerals industry, supporting domestic industries and creating opportunities for Filipinos.

The DENR is tasked with identifying areas suitable for responsible mineral development while safeguarding communities. Moreover, the government is working towards a fair and predictable regulatory environment to encourage responsible investment.

DENR Administrative Order No. 2025-17 establishes an enhanced fiscal regime for mining, providing a clearer framework for investors while ensuring the Philippines receives a fair share of the wealth generated from its resources. Streamlined mining application procedures are also expected to provide investors with greater certainty.

President Marcos underscored the need for economic development to align with environmental protection and respect for communities, noting that mineral resources are finite. He also recognized the Chamber of Mines of the Philippines for its role in shaping mining policy and its participation in the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, promoting transparency in revenue management from extractive industries.
