Manila:President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is taking the threat of a 'very strong' El Niño seriously, Malacañang stated, responding to criticism over his advice for households to collect rainwater in buckets (balde). The measure has faced scrutiny for potentially placing the burden on individuals.
According to Philippines News Agency, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro emphasized that the President's remarks are part of broader preparations for the anticipated prolonged dry spell, which could worsen in the coming months.
Castro highlighted the importance of considering the government's wider preparations rather than focusing solely on the bucket comment. She noted that households could be taught how to filter collected rainwater for safe use. Social Welfare and Development Secretary Rex Gatchalian has been working with the President on this initiative and is preparing an instructional video on water filtration.
The government urges the public to seriously consider these recommendations and assess the preparedness measures being implemented. President Marcos has convened key agencies to refine preparations for the El Niño, addressing hospital readiness, food and water security, cloud seeding, assistance for affected farmers, and alternative learning arrangements should extreme heat disrupt classes.
