Quezon City: Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla announced that President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has made his decision regarding the next chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP). Remulla shared this update during a press briefing at Camp Karingal, indicating that the President's choice will be revealed soon.
According to Philippines News Agency, Remulla confirmed that discussions have taken place, and the President has settled on a candidate. However, the official announcement is expected within the next two weeks. Remulla described the chosen candidate as having a commendable track record and qualifications suitable for the role.
President Marcos had previously extended the term of the current PNP chief, Gen. Rommel Marbil, by four months beyond his mandatory retirement on February 7. This extension aims to maintain stability during the upcoming 2025 midterm elections. Gen. Marbil, 56, has been serving as the PNP chief since his appointment on April 1, 2024.
The selection process for the new PNP chief has been ongoing, with several high-ranking officials considered for the position. Candidates include PNP Deputy Chief for Administration Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., PNP Chief Directorial Staff Lt. Gen. Edgar Allan Okubo, National Capital Region Police Office Director Brig. Gen. Anthony Aberin, and Criminal Investigation and Detection Group Director Maj. Gen. Nicolas Torre III.
