President Marcos Vows Thorough Scrutiny of 2027 National Budget

Manila:Malacañang assured the public that the proposed PHP7.2 trillion national budget for 2027 would undergo further scrutiny. President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is committed to listening to budget watchdogs and will ensure that any 'red flags' are addressed with proper documentation and clear project descriptions.

According to Philippines News Agency, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro emphasized that President Marcos is determined that public funds must be protected from abuse and should be directed toward the needs of the Filipino people. Castro reiterated the President's directive that public funds should benefit the populace and not be misused.

Concerns were raised by civil society groups and budget watchdogs regarding alleged insertions in the House of Representatives' version of the 2027 General Appropriations Bill (GAB), which was approved on the third reading on October 12. These concerns included nearly 7,000 infrastructure projects worth PHP190 billion that were allegedly added without sufficient supporting documents and clear justifications.

Castro highlighted that the budget is still in the legislative process, requiring Senate deliberations and a review by the bicameral conference committee. Afterward, it will be reviewed by the President and his economic team before approval. She urged budget watchdogs to provide documentation on any alleged red flags to bring them to the President's attention, affirming that "The President is listening."
