Prosecution Team to Collaborate with Impeachment Court for Swift Trial of Vice President Duterte

Manila: The House prosecution team has expressed its willingness to collaborate with the Senate impeachment court in expediting the trial proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte. This cooperation comes in response to the court's call, led by Senator-judge Panfilo Lacson, for a quicker resolution to the trial.

According to Philippines News Agency, Lawyer Jay Tolosa, serving as the legal spokesperson for the House prosecution panel, addressed the court's desire to abbreviate the trial during a press briefing. Despite being allotted 11 days by the impeachment court to substantiate the allegations of grave threats made by Vice President Duterte against President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., Tolosa acknowledged the sentiment among some senator-judges to accelerate the proceedings.

Tolosa emphasized the prosecution's shared interest with the senator-judges in concluding the trial promptly, while ensuring the effective presentation of evidence. He noted that the prosecution team regularly evaluates their approach after each hearing to make necessary adjustments. This includes the potential decision not to call certain witnesses if their testimony has already been addressed by earlier witnesses.

The possibility of the trial extending into the Christmas season was raised by Senator-judge Lacson, prompting Tolosa to reaffirm the prosecution's commitment to cooperating with the impeachment court. He emphasized that while the trial's speed is important, the thorough presentation of evidence remains a priority given the seriousness of the charges involved.

Tolosa concluded by reiterating the prosecution's dedication to achieving a timely resolution, while maintaining the integrity of the trial process. The team remains focused on ensuring that the proceedings are both efficient and comprehensive.
