MANILA: The Quezon City (QC) government and the University of the Philippines-Diliman campus on Monday received essential amenities for cyclists from the Department of Transportation (DOTr). Twenty-one sets of short-term end-of-trip cycling facilities were established in UP for students and cycling enthusiasts and another 15 at the city hall. "This is just the beginning. These facilities symbolize our ongoing journey towards a more sustainable and cyclist-friendly Quezon City, where our streets are safer and our air is cleaner," DOTr Assistant Secretary for Road Transport and Infrastructure James Andres Melad said during the turnover ceremonies. Quezon City is the most bike-friendly city in the Philippines, according to the 2023 Mobility Awards. The city has established bike lanes along major roads, including Elliptical Avenue, and is working on expanding the lanes. Each of the sets for the city hall and the UP campus include bicycle racks, bicycle sheds and repair stations. In the same event, QC Vice M ayor Gian Sotto said the DOTr's project would help strengthen sustainable transportation in the city. "Cycling is more than just a mode of transportation. It is a powerful tool for change. By providing these end-of-trip facilities we are encouraging the people to choose cycling as a viable everyday option for commuting," he added.
