Quezon city: History books often describe revolutions through the language of conflict, but on Tuesday, Quezon City celebrated the life of Melchora Aquino or Tandang Sora, looking beyond the battlefield - her legacy of care. Known as the 'Mother of Katipunan', Tandang Sora did not fight with arms, but sustained the revolution at its most vulnerable moments.

According to Philippines News Agency, QC Mayor Joy Belmonte emphasized Tandang Sora's unique form of heroism, which was not characterized by force or weaponry but by providing meals, shelter, and provisions. In her speech, Belmonte described Aquino's life as proof that the act of care and being a mother is revolutionary. Tandang Sora played a crucial role by supporting the Katipuneros with food, shelter, and medical aid and by allowing her home to serve as a meeting place for the Katipunan.

Despite being arrested and exiled to Marianas Island by Spanish authorities, Tandang Sora refused to betray the Katipunan, further highlighting her unwavering commitment to the cause. Her legacy was further honored on her 214th birth anniversary by awarding the Gawad Tandang Sora to Felicity Jean Gonzalez, a mother and advocate for children with developmental and learning disabilities. Gonzalez's journey began as a mother seeking support for her child with autism, eventually leading her to co-found the Philippine Association for Citizens with Developmental and Learning Disabilities.

In addition to honoring Tandang Sora, Mayor Belmonte inaugurated the Bangsamoro Women's Exhibit at the Tandang Sora Women's Museum, showcasing the cultural heritage of various Bangsamoro groups. The exhibit and museum emphasize Quezon City's dedication to inclusivity and shared cultural heritage, offering free public access.

By honoring Tandang Sora and contemporary women leaders, Belmonte highlighted the vital role women play in sustaining the nation through care and steadfast service. She called on citizens to draw inspiration from Tandang Sora's example and serve others.

The significance of Tandang Sora's contributions is further recognized by Republic Act 12218, signed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. in June 2025, declaring January 6 a special working holiday in Quezon City to commemorate her birth anniversary.
