Quezon City: The Quezon City (QC) government is offering hands-on training opportunities to aspiring veterinarians and senior high school (SHS) students through expanded veterinary training and on-the-job training (OJT) programs. In a news release Monday, Mayor Belmonte announced that the QC Veterinary Department (QCVD) has partnered with the Quezon City High School to implement a work immersion program specifically for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) students. The initiative aims to provide these students with real-world experience, helping them to develop necessary technical and professional skills, ultimately preparing them for their future careers.
According to Philippines News Agency, the OJT program is designed to inspire the next generation of veterinarians and animal welfare advocates. By offering real-world training, the program not only invests in the students' futures but also in the health and safety of the Quezon City community. Mayor Joy Belmonte emphasized that this initiative reflects the city government's commitment to education, public health, and responsible pet care.
Veterinary medicine students from universities and colleges across Luzon are also invited to participate in the QCVD internship program. This program will allow students to gain experience in animal care, clinical procedures, rabies prevention, spay and neuter programs, and food safety regulations. QCVD has already engaged with several universities and is in the process of finalizing partnerships through memoranda of understanding. Additionally, the department is working with Quezon City University to integrate specialized learning modules into its training programs.
Interns will have the opportunity to gain practical experience at the QC Animal Care and Adoption Center located in Barangay Payatas. This center provides shelter and medical services for rescued animals, reinforcing the city's commitment to animal welfare and veterinary excellence. QCVD head Ana Maria Cabel highlighted the importance of the initiative, noting that veterinary medicine plays a crucial role in public health and food safety. The programs aim to ensure that future veterinarians are well-prepared for their profession.
Since 2021, the QC Animal Care and Adoption Center has been offering temporary shelter for rescued animals and medical services, including surgical procedures. The center serves as a training ground for interns, providing them with invaluable hands-on experience.
