Manila: Parts of the country will continue to experience rains, while some provinces are forecast to experience drought and dry spells in August amid the El Ni±o, the weather bureau said Friday. "It is important to note that despite the El Ni±o, various weather systems will cause rains, and tropical cyclones are still likely to develop or enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility or PAR," Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) weather specialist May Canlas said in a video report.

According to Philippines News Agency, more rains are expected across the western section of Luzon in August, and across Mindanao in September. About two to four tropical cyclones are expected to develop or enter the PAR this month, and about seven to 11 from August to January, Canlas said. This month, she said eight provinces could possibly experience drought, including Camarines Norte, Catanduanes, Western Samar, and Siquijor.

By November, dry spells are forecast in 12 provinces, including Eastern Samar, Leyte, Southern Leyte, and those located in the Zamboanga Peninsula and Caraga. Meanwhile, Canlas said the public could also expect warmer than normal temperatures to persist in parts of the country.

PAGASA Administrator Nathaniel Servando told the Philippine News Agency that normal temperatures vary depending on location. He said the normal temperatures in mountainous areas in Luzon are 13.6°C to 27.2°C; Metro Manila 21.8°C to 36.8°C; the rest of Luzon 20.2°C to 38.8°C; the Visayas 21.1°C to 37.1°C; mountainous Mindanao 13.4°C to 33.9°C; and the rest of Mindanao 20°C to 37.9°C.

Earlier, Servando said drought conditions are expected during the last quarter of 2026 up to the first few months of 2027. Both Servando and Canlas said fewer rainfall and warmer temperatures are possible in more areas in the coming months.
