Manila: Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla announced the nationwide rollout of the Unified 911 emergency response system, highlighting the increased expectations for efficient police and fire services. This development necessitates the Philippine National Police (PNP) and Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) to enhance their response capabilities.

According to Philippines News Agency, Remulla made this statement during the turnover ceremony of 20 emergency response motorcycles to Iloilo City and Aklan. The motorcycles, Honda PCX160 models, will be employed by tourist police units in Iloilo City and Aklan's Provincial Police. This initiative aims to improve response times in areas characterized by narrow roads and streets.

Remulla emphasized the Department of the Interior and Local Government's (DILG) focus on mobile and practical vehicles. He noted that approximately 80 percent of the PNP's 230,000 personnel are proficient in riding scooters, in contrast to less than half being capable of driving four-wheel vehicles. The DILG plans to implement a memorandum circular by 2027, mandating new police recruits to be adept at driving both motorcycles and four-wheel vehicles.

Highlighting the importance of quick response, Remulla pointed out that limited driving skills could impede police performance during emergencies. He also stated that the DILG is working on enhancing the BFP's firefighting capabilities.

Remulla disclosed a recent agreement with a South Korean supplier for the procurement of 1,500 firetrucks over three years. This government-to-government deal ensures the delivery of 150 units monthly, starting January 2027, without involving intermediaries.
