Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has stated that resigning from government service will not clear officials linked to alleged irregularities in flood control projects, emphasizing the need for accountability through due process: Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Monday said resigning from government service will not clear officials linked to the alleged irregularities in flood control projects, but stressed that accountability must be established through due process.
According to Philippines News Agency, Marcos expressed in his latest podcast episode that resignation is insufficient to absolve those involved. He highlighted the extensive damage caused, noting not just financial and economic losses, but also the impact on people's lives.
The Marcos administration has begun a comprehensive review of flood control projects in response to reports of anomalous allocations and alleged collusion between contractors and government officials. To address these concerns, the President has established the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI) to investigate the anomalies.
In its interim reports, the ICI recommended that the Office of the Ombudsman consider filing graft charges against 18 individuals. Among those implicated is resigned lawmaker Elizaldy 'Zaldy' Co, who is accused of involvement in a substandard flood control project in Oriental Mindoro valued at PHP289.5 million. Co has denied the accusations against him.
