Cebu City: Lawyers must be defenders and protectors of the constitution, justice, rule of law, and the weak who cannot afford the cost of legal service, Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez said in his message before the Integrated Bar of the Philippines' (IBP) 20th National Convention of Lawyers in Lahug, Cebu City on Friday. According to Philippines News Agency, the convention's theme is, 'From Milestones to Horizons: Strengthening the Future of the Legal Profession.' Romualdez emphasized the need for the legal community to ensure that every Filipino, regardless of their socio-economic status, understands that the law serves as a protector of the weak and that justice is a right, not a privilege. He highlighted that lawyers should be seen as guardians of the nation's moral and legal compass, not just advocates for their clients. The leader of the 306-strong House of Representatives underscored that the legal profession requires more than mere expertise; it demands courage. He called for courage to uphold th e Constitution even when inconvenient, to speak the truth amidst safer silence, and to stand for justice for those who cannot afford representation, whose voices are often overshadowed by wealth and influence. Romualdez urged his fellow lawyers to remember their fundamental role as defenders of the law and stewards of justice, regardless of where their careers may take them. He reflected on the historical significance of the law as the foundation of the nation, the silent force shaping destinies, and the final safeguard against tyranny and injustice. He also addressed the evolving role of the law in an era marked by technological and geopolitical changes. Romualdez pointed out that technology, artificial intelligence, and global shifts are challenging traditional notions of commerce, law practice, sovereignty, and international order. He noted that democracy is being tested not by force, but by apathy and the misuse of law. Assuring the legal community of the House's support, Romualdez stated that the legi slative body remains a committed partner in evolving the legal system to better serve the Filipino people. He called on lawyers to lend their voices, intellect, and moral clarity to guide the way forward. 'The challenge that lies before us today is to build a legal profession and a nation where justice is not only done but is felt by every Filipino,' he concluded, urging this commitment to be their enduring legacy.
