Sabungeros Families Urge Prosecutors to Indict Gretchen Barretto and Others

Manila: The families of missing sabungeros, or cockfighting enthusiasts, have filed a partial motion for reconsideration, urging prosecutors to press charges against several individuals not previously included in the case concerning the disappearance of their relatives.

According to Philippines News Agency, the complainants are seeking to charge actress Gretchen Barretto, Eric Dela Rosa, engineer Celso Salazar, Mayor Arjay Mea, Willia Ang, Lornalee Vingson, Richard Perez, Arman Santos, Jojo Cruz, and John Capinpin with a "special complex crime of kidnapping with homicide and serious illegal detention." The families allege that the Pitmaster Alpha Group, led by Angelito Guerra, Tady Pala, Joey delos Santos, and Capinpin, conspired to kill the victims during their detention for alleged cheating.

The relatives further accuse police and security facilitators, including retired police official Jonnel Estomo, Col. Jacinto Malinao Jr., and Hanz Florez, of enabling these operations. They claim that these officials provided advice, protection with rewards, overall security, and were present during abductions where victims were killed in detention.

Additionally, the families are pushing for the indictment of the group that allegedly subdued the victims: Ronquillo Anding, Roberto Matillano, Virgilio Bayog, Johnry Consolacion, Victorino Jocosol, and Herolden Alonto. Civilian accessories and supporters, such as Edwin Tose, Allan Siaco, and Kate Villalon, are also named for their reported frequent accompaniment of cockfighting leaders.

The families highlight whistleblower Dondon Patidongan's statement, asserting it provides "prima facie evidence with reasonable certainty of conviction" that the respondents conspired to commit the crimes in question. Last month, the Department of Justice ordered the filing of multiple charges against 22 individuals, including billionaire Charlie "Atong" Ang, related to the missing sabungeros.
