South cotabato: The Department of Education (DepEd) on Friday assured that the safety and well-being of learners remain its top priority following the reported school shooting incident in South Cotabato. South Cotabato Governor Reynaldo Tamayo initially reported that at least five learners were affected at Banga National High School. Those injured were transported to Surallah Community Hospital and the provincial hospital.
According to Philippines News Agency, the Philippine National Police reported that the shooting occurred at about 1:30 p.m., with the suspect reportedly using a .45 caliber pistol. In-person classes are suspended until September 21. The DepEd is coordinating with local authorities to investigate the incident.
The DepEd stated, "Our immediate priority is the safety and well-being of our learners, teachers, and school personnel. We are closely coordinating with the Schools Division Office, Regional Office, local authorities and law enforcement to verify the circumstances and provide necessary assistance." Psychological first aid and psychosocial support will also be provided to those affected by the incident.
The DepEd urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information while the investigation is underway. On September 3, the agency launched its nationwide simultaneous school safety drills as part of its intensified efforts for response preparation against active threats or emergencies in schools across the country. This effort comes alongside other measures like stringent security protocols at public schools' entry and exit points, as well as increased police visibility and coordination with local authorities.
