Sagay City’s 12 Under Squad Captures 2026 PONY World Series Title

Hemet: The 12 Under Girls of Sagay City, Negros Occidental captured the championship in the 2026 PONY International West Zone Softball World Series in Hemet, California on Monday (Philippine time).

According to Philippines News Agency, this is the second PONY World Series title of Sagay City this year after winning the Girls 14 Under Division crown only last month. Mayor Leo Rafael Cueva commended the athletes and coaches for the pride they brought anew to the northern Negros city. 'This achievement shows what Sagaynon talent, discipline, and teamwork can accomplish on the world stage. We are proud of our young athletes for proving that with dedication and perseverance, no dream is too big,' Cueva said in a statement.

The Sagaynon softbelles, who are learners of Jose B. Puey Sr. Elementary School and Sagay National High School, defeated Redlands of California to bring home the title in the 12 Under division. Schools Division Superintendent Dannie Clark Uguil said the Negrense squad beat more than 10 teams during the tournament, reflecting not only athletic excellence but resilience, discipline, and commitment as well. 'You have brought immense pride and honor to Sagay City. Your victory is an inspiration to every young athlete to dream boldly, work tirelessly, and believe that no challenge is too great,' he added.

Uguil acknowledged the dedication of the coaches, trainers, and parents in developing young athletes capable of competing and winning in international tournaments with the support of the city government and other sponsors. On July 20, the city's Girls 14 Under conquered Mexico's RXII Kino Team in the finals to win the championship after finishing only fourth last year. In 2024, the softball team of Negros Occidental, comprised mostly of players from Sagay City, also secured the title in the Girls 16 Under PONY International World Series held in McAllen, Texas.
