San benito: The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) 13 (Caraga) has issued a warning to the residents of San Benito in Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte, following the detection of Pyrodinium bahamense var copressum, a poisonous microorganism responsible for causing Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP), in samples collected from San Benito Bay.

According to Philippines News Agency, the detection was confirmed through recent laboratory examinations aimed at safeguarding both the residents and the local shellfish industry. The examination revealed a significant concentration of 1,068 cells per liter of the PSP-causing microorganism in the collected samples.

The BFAR-13 has advised the public to avoid collecting, selling, and consuming any shellfish and Acetes sp. or alamang from the affected bay to prevent shellfish poisoning. However, the consumption of other marine products such as fish, squids, shrimps, and crabs remains safe, provided they are fresh, thoroughly washed, and have their internal organs like gills and intestines removed before cooking.

In its advisory, the BFAR-13 also noted that it is collaborating with local government units to further disseminate information and ensure public safety.
