Quezon: The Municipality of San Remigio has reached out to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to support its initiative to establish an Ecotourism Special Economic Zone (ESEZ) in three of its barangays. Mayor Margarito Mission Jr. and Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office chief Ruth Martinez engaged in discussions with DENR Secretary Raphael Lotilla in Quezon City to advocate for this project.

According to Philippines News Agency, Mayor Mission and Martinez emphasized the strategic importance of the three barangays-Aningalan, Osorio II, and Bulan-bulan-as corridors to the Sibalom Natural Park (SNP). Aningalan is known for its cool climate, reminiscent of Baguio, while all three barangays are part of the Central Panay Mountain Range. The nearby SNP, located in the town of Sibalom, was opened to tourists in 2022, enhancing the area's appeal.

During the meeting, DENR agreed to collaborate with the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) to offer technical assistance for the creation of the ESEZ. PEZA's role would include inviting investors to develop tourist amenities in the region. The local government unit (LGU) of San Remigio is tasked with preparing the land use plan and maintaining the ESEZ.

The establishment of the ESEZ is expected to provide the LGU with additional income through tax revenues. Martinez highlighted that the development of tourist amenities and infrastructure would be a significant step forward in promoting ecotourism and economic growth in San Remigio.
