Manila: The Sandiganbayan has ordered the transfer of former House Speaker Martin Romualdez from the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) to the Quezon City Jail Male Dormitory in Payatas. This decision was made by the anti-graft court's Third Division after PGH doctors reported that Romualdez is in stable condition and does not require special medical monitoring.

According to Philippines News Agency, PGH Medical Director Dr. Gerardo Legaspi confirmed that the results of Romualdez's medical examination were submitted to the court on Sunday. Romualdez had been moved to PGH from Cardinal Santos Medical Center on Saturday for an independent medical evaluation. The lawmaker, who represents the first district of Leyte, suffers from chronic coronary syndrome, hypothyroidism, sleep apnea, anxiety, and major depressive disorder.

Romualdez has expressed his respect for the Sandiganbayan's decision and remains firm in his stance to contest the charges against him. In a statement, he conveyed gratitude to his medical team at Cardinal Santos Medical Center and PGH, committing to adhere to their medical advice.

The shift in Romualdez's detention location does not alter his determination to confront the allegations. He reiterated his pledge to face the charges in court and asserted his innocence, emphasizing his readiness to answer the accusations.

Acknowledging the challenging situation for himself and his family, Romualdez stated his intent to approach the forthcoming days with dignity, faith, and confidence in the truth.

The Office of the Ombudsman recently filed a plunder case against Romualdez, former House Appropriations Committee chairperson Zaldy Co, and two private individuals. They are accused of amassing PHP7.4 billion in ill-gotten wealth via kickbacks, 'commitments,' and other schemes related to government infrastructure projects.
