Senate Impeachment Court Defers to Supreme Court on VP Sara Duterte Impeachment Case

Manila: The Senate, acting as an Impeachment Court, has announced its adherence to the Supreme Court's decision declaring the impeachment articles against Vice President Sara Duterte unconstitutional. The announcement underscores the Senate's commitment to constitutional clarity and legal prudence before proceeding with any trial.

According to Philippines News Agency, Senate Impeachment Court spokesperson, lawyer Regie Tongol, emphasized the Senate's dedication to the rule of law and its role as a co-equal branch of government in respecting the Supreme Court's final rulings. Tongol stated that the decision aligns with the Senate majority's stance to approach the impeachment with caution amid unresolved legal questions.

Tongol further noted the Senate's anticipation of the formal transmittal of the Supreme Court's decision, which will guide the Impeachment Court's jurisdiction in the future. The Senate reiterated its commitment to constitutional order, due process, and the integrity of democratic institutions.

Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada endorsed the Supreme Court's decision, highlighting the importance of legality and due process in holding public officials accountable. Estrada expressed confidence that the Senate would adhere to the Supreme Court's ruling and shift focus to pressing national issues, such as the rehabilitation of typhoon-affected communities.

Senator Imee Marcos urged her colleagues to respect the Supreme Court's ruling and return to legislative work, while Senator Joel Villanueva supported the Senate's cautious approach. Villanueva reiterated the Senate's dedication to the rule of law and constitutional procedures.

In contrast, Senator Risa Hontiveros expressed concern over the abrupt halt of the impeachment trial, noting that the Supreme Court did not exonerate Vice President Duterte and suggesting the possibility of refiling the impeachment complaint in the future. Senator Bam Aquino echoed this sentiment, advocating for the continuation of the impeachment trial and emphasizing the Senate's constitutional mandate in the impeachment process.

The Supreme Court's decision effectively pauses the impeachment proceedings against Vice President Duterte, pending any further legal actions or developments.
