Manila: Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian on Tuesday announced that the Senate is ready to proceed with the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, following the case transmitted by the House of Representatives.

According to Philippines News Agency, Gatchalian made this assurance while inspecting the Senate plenary hall, where the impeachment trial is scheduled to commence on July 6. He noted that the Senate is well-prepared and emphasized that improvements will continue as needed. Gatchalian also inspected several Senate offices designated for use during the proceedings.

The prosecution and defense teams are set to conduct their own inspections later in the week. Gatchalian mentioned that despite limited space, arrangements have been made to optimize the available areas. The Senate plans to accommodate at least 150 guests from both public and private sectors on a first-come, first-served basis through the Visitor Management System.

The trial hearings are initially scheduled from Monday to Wednesday at 2 p.m. After President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s fifth State of the Nation Address on July 28, the hearings will shift to Tuesdays through Thursdays, maintaining the same time. The Senate convened as an impeachment court on May 18.

Vice President Duterte faces accusations from the House of Representatives, including culpable violation of the Constitution, graft and corruption, bribery, betrayal of public trust, and other high crimes.
