Manila: The Senate has established security and crowd-control measures in anticipation of the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte. These measures include preparations for potential protest activities outside the chamber, as stated by Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian.

According to Philippines News Agency, Gatchalian, in a chance interview following the Senate flag-raising ceremony on Monday, mentioned that the Senate has prepared for various scenarios as the impeachment court resumes proceedings later in the day. Gatchalian emphasized the importance of being ready for public actions outside the Senate, noting that the eventuality of such events has been taken into account.

The Senate has also requested assistance from the Philippine National Police (PNP) to ensure that any demonstrations remain orderly. Gatchalian highlighted the need for support to maintain order during protests.

When questioned about his role in the impeachment court, Gatchalian confirmed that, as per the rules, the Senate President acts as the presiding officer. He refrained from discussing pending matters, emphasizing that these should be addressed by the impeachment court.

Gatchalian acknowledged the participation of senators in the all-senator caucus held ahead of the proceedings. Senators Loren Legarda and Robin Padilla's attendance was noted as an indication of their involvement in the trial. He also mentioned that no minority senators have indicated plans to skip or boycott the proceedings.

The caucus facilitated productive discussions and generated several suggestions, which Gatchalian welcomed as part of efforts to ensure an orderly impeachment process. Additionally, he mentioned that the Senate continues to address urgent matters, such as the national budget, due to the need to tackle economic concerns amid slowing growth.
