Manila: Senator Sherwin Gatchalian on Thursday pledged to monitor irregularities in infrastructure programs, asserting that the Senate would use its oversight powers to ensure public funds are spent transparently and benefit the populace.

According to Philippines News Agency, the chair of the Senate Committee on Finance made this statement following the Department of Finance's clarification that no loan agreement has been signed between the Philippines and South Korea. Gatchalian emphasized that controversies related to corruption in infrastructure projects have increased scrutiny on government spending, with international partners observing how the country manages development funds.

Gatchalian stated, "While I acknowledge the efforts of the Executive, as Finance Committee chair, I remain committed to exercising strict oversight to ensure that infrastructure projects are free from irregularities and that programs are undertaken in the best interest of our people." He further stressed the importance of ensuring that every project benefits the people, not just a select few.

The senator highlighted that accountability in large-scale projects is essential to protecting taxpayer money and maintaining the trust of both the public and development partners. The Department of Finance had earlier clarified that no finalized loan agreement exists between the Philippines and South Korea, amid reports of potential cooperation deals for infrastructure.

This development comes as corruption allegations surrounding flood control projects have attracted international attention, leading to calls for stronger safeguards in foreign-assisted projects.
