Senator Advocates for Stricter Travel Permits to Combat Child Trafficking

Manila: A senator on Monday underscored the need for stricter permits for minors traveling abroad to prevent child trafficking. In a statement, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian emphasized that implementing the Travel Clearance for Minors Traveling Abroad (MTA) would not only streamline the issuance of travel permits but also reinforce safeguards against trafficking by verifying the identities of children, their parents, guardians, or travel companions.

According to Philippines News Agency, the senator stated, "By enforcing stricter measures, we will also strengthen efforts to prevent cases of child trafficking." He called for increased cooperation among the Bureau of Immigration and other agencies under the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT) to bolster anti-trafficking measures.

He also cited the Expanded Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2022 as a key legal framework guiding efforts to combat trafficking and child exploitation. "We must always ensure the welfare and safety of our children so they do not fall victim to any form of violence or abuse," he added.
