Senator Calls for Stronger Protection for OFWs After Kuwait Tragedy

Manila: Senator Sherwin Gatchalian on Wednesday urged for stronger measures to ensure the safety and welfare of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) following the death of Jenny Alvarado in Kuwait, reportedly due to coal suffocation. In a statement, the senator offered his heartfelt condolences to Alvarado's family, and emphasized the need for immediate action to prevent similar tragedies.

According to Philippines News Agency, the senator highlighted the urgent need to address workplace risks faced by OFWs. Gatchalian specifically asked the Department of Foreign Affairs to enhance monitoring of foreign employers and enforcement of bilateral agreements to protect OFWs. He also called on the Department of Migrant Workers to prioritize training and education to equip workers with knowledge on identifying and avoiding workplace hazards.

Gatchalian remarked that OFWs are vital contributors to their families and the economy, and they deserve stronger safeguards against accidents and fatalities.
