Manila: Senator Alan Peter Cayetano has expressed his support for President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s commitment to digital transformation, especially within the education sector, while stressing the importance of ensuring that such reforms deliver tangible benefits to citizens.
According to Philippines News Agency, Cayetano emphasized that the government's digital initiatives should not only focus on infrastructure but also be part of a broader effort to make citizens feel valued and included. He highlighted the need for digital transformation to be relevant and transformative, underscoring the significance of nation-building that prioritizes the people's needs.
In his recent State of the Nation Address, President Marcos reported advancements in the government's efforts to enhance connectivity, including the completion of the National Fiber Backbone's initial phases, the activation of 19,000 free Wi-Fi sites, and the distribution of SIM cards with complimentary data to students across the nation.
Senator Cayetano, who leads the Senate Committee on Higher, Technical, and Vocational Education, acknowledged the vital role of digital tools in addressing national issues. However, he stressed that these tools must be implemented with clear objectives centered on citizens' needs. Cayetano pointed out that digitalization, while not a panacea, can effectively tackle many challenges when properly assigned to various government agencies.
He also mentioned the E-Governance Act and Konektadong Pinoy Act, both of which he authored during the 19th Congress, as essential reforms that align with the administration's digital vision. The E-Governance Act aims to streamline government services and improve transparency, while the Konektadong Pinoy Act seeks to enhance internet access through increased competition among service providers, particularly in remote areas and educational institutions.
Furthermore, Cayetano praised President Marcos for the candid tone of his address, viewing it as an indication of the administration's willingness to recognize past shortcomings in public service and make necessary corrections in the remaining years of his term. He remarked on the positive implications of beginning with honesty, noting that there is still time for meaningful changes to be made.
