Senator Proposes Summoning Chinese Envoy Over New Philippine Maritime Laws.

Manila: Senate Majority Leader Francis Tolentino suggested on Wednesday that the Philippine government should summon China's ambassador to discuss and provide official copies of the recently enacted Philippine Maritime Zones Act and Archipelagic Sea Lanes Act. These laws were signed into effect by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. According to Philippines News Agency, Tolentino's proposal comes as a response to Beijing's recent action of summoning the Philippine ambassador to express its objections to these laws. Tolentino emphasized the importance of respect for the Philippines as a sovereign nation and mentioned his willingness to personally deliver copies of the laws to the Chinese envoy. He highlighted that China would eventually receive an official copy from the United Nations. Tolentino stressed that the Philippine government should not feel intimidated or pressured by China's reactions and should firmly uphold its maritime rights. He stated that China's behavior underscores the legitimacy of the Phil ippines' stance as supported by international law. Tolentino shared that he had discussed the proposal with Department of Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo during budget deliberations. However, Secretary Manalo informed him that the Chinese ambassador is currently on a month-long leave and not in the country. Copies of the new laws will also be sent to the International Maritime Organization and the International Civil Aviation Organization.
