Manila: Voluntary pay cuts among government officials may help augment funding for fuel subsidies and cash assistance amid the oil crisis, a senator said Wednesday. Senator Joseph Victor 'JV' Ejercito suggested that proposals to trim salaries and allowances could support aid for vulnerable sectors while setting an example in government austerity.

According to Philippines News Agency, Senator Ejercito expressed that if government officials voluntarily reduce their salaries and allowances, it could significantly aid vulnerable sectors. During the Kapihan sa Senado forum, he mentioned that such actions could be adopted willingly, especially if Senate leadership takes the lead in implementing austerity measures. Ejercito emphasized that the government's initiative could serve as a model for others.

Earlier, Tingog Party-list Representative Jude Acidre expressed his support for the proposal, mentioning that lawmakers have previously reduced their compensation during crises. Acidre affirmed in a television interview that reducing compensation is a standard practice during times of crisis and that the move could help provide additional funding for fuel subsidies and cash aid. The ongoing tensions in the Middle East continue to put pressure on oil prices, making this proposal timely and relevant.
