Senator Urges LGUs to Establish Hydration Stations Amid El Niño Concerns

Manila:Local government units (LGUs) are being urged to establish free hydration stations and cooling centers to protect residents from extreme heat conditions as forecasts predict a potentially strong El Niño, according to Senator Risa Hontiveros.

According to Philippines News Agency, Hontiveros emphasized the importance of collaboration between LGUs and the national government to provide free drinking water through hydration stations. This initiative aims to prevent heat-related illnesses, such as heat stroke, especially in areas where people work and gather daily.

Hontiveros, who chairs the Senate Committee on Health and Demography, stated that the installation of free drinking water stations should not add financial burdens on individuals. She highlighted the necessity of public access to clean drinking water and suggested transforming public spaces like schools, libraries, museums, and community centers into cooling shelters during periods of extreme heat.

Additionally, Hontiveros proposed that malls and other private establishments designate air-conditioned common areas where people can rest and cool down without the obligation to make a purchase. With the threat of a strong El Niño looming, she stressed the need for both public and private sectors to prepare for its impact.

The measures she recommends are considered immediate solutions to help mitigate the effects of the anticipated 'Super El Niño.' The Senate Ad Hoc Committee on Reinvigorating Investment and Sustainable Economic Growth, also chaired by Hontiveros, has been tasked with exploring strategies to address the phenomenon's expected consequences.
